Loving Vincent
Vincent Van Gogh; one of the world's most-celebrated artists, and now recognised as one of the greatest artistic geniuses ever to take a brush to a canvas. Despite his ultra-fame nowadays, it was drastically different during his lifetime, and for his brief, tough life, he lived on, and usually below, the poverty line as an outsider to society. Living on scraps, and with his only income coming from donations from his brother Theo, who wasn't wealthy enough to afford it but did so out of the brotherly love he held for Vincent, the artist ended up in the South of France, where, tragically he committed suicide in 1890.
Vincent's talent was not at all recognised by the artists of the time, commandeering a radical new technique, and seeing things in a completely different, innovative way, but one that was not appreciated by those who mattered. His fascinating life, during which he befriended painters such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat & Toulouse-Lautrec to name but a few, is to be documented in a new, unique biopic film entitled Loving Vincent, which will premiere in 2017.
The film has taken six years to make due to its unconvential and dedicated style; the entire film is in the Van Gogh aesthetic; an animated, painted film. Every frame contains the iconic, thick brush strokes that are visible in his works, with the characters adjusted in the same artistic effect. Amazingly, each and every one of the 56,800 frames in the film is an oil painting on canvas, painted by one of the 60 artists who worked on the project. What this will achieve is a remarkably devoted, loving portrait of the man who lived what is an inordinately upsetting life, filled with constant rejection and disregard. This biopic aims to celebrate his genius, and stir an honest sympathy for the unbelievably talented man.
If you find yourself in London this Friday 28th October, the two directors will be giving a talk at the National Gallery in advance of the film's release, with some sneak previews. For now, watch the trailer here.
