Queen of Christmas

Traditionally here in the UK, John Lewis is king of Christmas. Every year people await their advert release with huge anticipation and this year was no different. Teasing Buster the Boxer on social media for a whole week, people were champing at the bit to see the full advert before it had even been released. And, to give them credit, it didn’t disappoint having already clocked over 16 million views.

However, over in Spain, the Spanish Lottery is king. The lottery in Spain is an institution and an immense tradition around Christmas. Unlike in the UK, you can buy split lottery tickets so that the prize pool is shared amongst communities or families, making it a sociable competition that brings people closer together. Having arguably won Christmas on a pan-European scale last year with their Justino ad about a night watchman, Leo Burnett Madrid have laid down another very strong marker for 2016 with their latest release December 21st.

Without giving too much away, the ad looks at a family’s response to their elderly mum winning the lottery, and their incredibly sweet efforts to make it as special as humanly possible for her. It is a heart-warming, unifying celebration of family, and an ad that will make every family come together and appreciate each other this Christmas.

Watch it here, and decide for yourself if Leo Burnett Madrid have won Christmas for the second year in a row and crowned this old lady; Queen of Christmas.
