The Mysterious XX

After the huge success Jamie XX enjoyed for his solo album In Colour in 2015, there has been plenty of speculation as to whether there will be another XX album or whether this new solo move was a permanent one. Luckily enough for all fans of the first two albums, earlier this year the XX confirmed that they were working on new material and that a new album was on the way, however they did not confirm a date.

Recently, it seems as though the alternative band have been teasing their fans on Spotify. Having released various playlists to show people what was inspiring their music-writing, they mysteriously added a short 55-second unnamed, unlabelled song without mentioning why. The Internet blew up with conspiracy theories wondering whether it was an excerpt from a new song or just a random addition included to fuel the gossip fire.

The mystery continued this week when the 55-second song disappeared, and was replaced with a different enigmatic, secretive 55-second track, again with no details on artist nor any album artwork; just a white square. What’s more, listeners have claimed that the XX’s archetypal echoing voice is audible in the background.

So, what are these cryptic additions to their playlists? Excerpts from new songs? Or just cryptic clues leading fans down an empty corridor? One thing is for sure, make sure you follow the band closely over the next few months, their new album could come out any time soon, and who knows how they’ll reveal the news.
