Banksy Uncovered
Despite various people claiming to know the identity of famously
elusive street-artist, Banksy still maintains an aura of mystery around the
world. The Bristol-based graffiti artist has gone internationally viral in the
last decade with his politically-driven artwork capturing the imagination and embodying
the silent revolutionary spirit of a generation.
His work continues to crop up in the most interesting places
without warning as well as a number of Banksy-curated exhibitions around the
UK. Yet still, no one knows what he looks like, let alone what he sounds like.
New (well old) footage has recently resurfaced online from
an antiquated BBC series entitled Shadow
People of the artist himself giving an interview. You can’t see his face of
course but hearing his voice and his thinking behind his art is refreshingly
surreal; listening to the voice of someone so enigmatic is a very bizarre
experience. What’s more, his drastic revolutionary reasons behind his work are
somewhat punchier than you expect given his celebrity status these days. With
his work now plastered all over t-shirts and mugs, it is easy to forget that
Banksy is in fact producing this art as a rebellion, as a two fingers up to
society, a society he believes is corrupt and unjust.
What this video does for the viewer is to remind us of the strength
of Banksy’s beliefs in his work, his reasons behind it and it relights the
gritty fire of revolution that is omnipresent in his art. Check it out here, it’s
a great watch.
