Photographing Mermaids
Another cool, meaningful photography project that has come
to light in recent weeks, this time an environmental statement. The visual
medium is an incredibly effective way of spreading a message and we are seeing
an increasing number of politically/environmentally-driven campaigns gaining
the most traction on social media such as Instagram and Pinterest.
This iteration is of a similar ilk to the limited edition
shoe activation we saw from adidas the other week; a campaign to clean the
plastic waste out of our oceans.
Photographer Benjamin Von Wong has produced a series of
photographers of mermaids lying amongst 10,000 plastic bottles, all artistically
arranged to make it look like she is in the ocean or washed up on the beach. Despite
looking like a beautiful image at first glance, you quickly realise that she is
lying on a bed of disposed waste and the tone of the photo changes instantly. The
strewn, violent poses from the mermaids heighten this feeling of unease in the
images.
The inspiration for the work comes from the severe danger
our oceans face; in fact, if the amount of waste plastic in the ocean continues
to increase at the same rate it is now, there will be more plastic bottles in
the ocean than fish by 2050. That is shocking.
So, Von Wong wants to simply promote awareness of this issue
to give people a serious push to get on with it and do something about it. Check
out the images below.
