Stella McCartney gets sinister
Fashion films are an eclectic bunch, but one thing’s for
sure; they are never boring. The most recent one we looked at was the latest
Burberry film featuring Dom Gleeson and a whole host of other famous faces,
appearing more like a cinematic trailer than a fashion short.
Now, on a totally different path, Stella McCartney’s latest
output is a psychedelic, weird wonderland of a short film. It isn’t for the
faint-hearted and could certainly provoke more than a few night terrors, but it’s
an aesthetic joy with a dazzling colour palette to match. The Uncanny Valley is set partly in ‘The Clown Motel’, which is
even creepier than it sounds and used to be a nuclear testing site back in the
day.
Beginning with samples of old films and set to an inordinately
sinister voiceover, the video quickly builds to a scary, glitchy pace and
flicks between fast-moving heavily made up clowns and models staring hard down
the lens of the camera appearing to burn straight into your soul. Using almost
cartoon-esque sound effects that seem a complete contrast to what’s going on
onscreen, the characters do everything from gluttonously licking lollipops to abnormally
rapid blinking to slow stroking of clowns’ shoulders; it’s not your everyday
fashion film.
It’s a total creep-fest but there’s something very cool
about it. Check it out here but beware, it’s not easily forgotten.
