The Shipping Forecast Hangover Fiasco
The BBC shipping forecast is one of the most iconically dull
radio programmes but has a certain, cult-esque likeability. Not to mention the
fact that listening to the absurdly early broadcast is proof that you’re awake in
outstanding time.
One quite amazing element of this forecast is the simple
fact that it has been uninterrupted for 91 years. This was until yesterday.
Unfortunately, Tomasz Schafernaker has changed this error-free history after his
5.20am broadcast yesterday.
With the BBC Christmas party the night before, it turns out
Schafernaker put in an excellent shift and turned up to read the forecast not
in the sprightliest mood. Shortly after beginning to read, he had to excuse
himself to run out of the room and be sick.
Poor Tomasz, we’ve all gone to work the day after a
Christmas party feeling rotten, but none of us have blown nearly a century’s-worth
of history by doing it.
He has been inundated by tongue-in-cheek get well soon
messages on Twitter and we echo this; hope you feel better Tom.
