Golden Globes 2017: In a Nutshell
So, the Golden Globes took place last night and as per usual it was a star-studded event, a room utterly jam-packed with acting talent.
With the plethora of awards that were handed out it can be a bit overwhelming as a spectator, so to help you out here is a short, sharp summary of who won the hardhitting awards to help you know what should be top of your list for those cold January evenings. All the films mentioned in this article are linked to their respective trailers so click away and enjoy.
Best Actor: Casey Affleck won this for his role in Manchester by the Sea; a moving film about an uncle who has to bring up his nephew after the sudden, unexpected death of his brother. It is a heartwarming, touching and emotional film that will stir you deep inside. Well worth a watch.
Best Actress: Isabelle Huppert won this for her role in Elle; a French-language film about a CEO who tries to learn the identity of the man who raped her. A very dark and difficult film to watch, but an exceptional one.
Best Drama: Moonlight; a film that looks at the coming-of-age of a young man in Miami and the struggles he goes through. Interesting and deep, it's worth a peek.
Best Comedy or Musical: La La Land; Ryan Gosling plays an aspiring musician going out with an actress in the dazzling lights of LA. A fun and aesthetically-pleasing film, also picking up multiple other awards at this year's Golden Globes including Best Original Song and Best Actor in a Comedy for Gosling.
Best Animation: this was controversially won by Zootopia. With Moana and Sing both in the same category, we at Qulture were unconvinced by this one. Still, all three are worth a watch (but watch Zootopia third).
Best TV Series: The Crown; wholly deserved (as was Best Actress in a TV Drama, which was won by Claire Foy), this series is exceptional. However, every nomination in this category deserves a watch: Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things and the incredibly heart-warming This is Us are all absolutely fantastic pieces of television. What an incredible year for TV.
Best TV Comedy Series: Atlanta; this is a humorous TV series simply looking at the people of Atlanta and their ways of living. It is written by the incredibly talented Donald Glover, who is also the famous rapper Childish Gambino and who also won Best Actor in a TV Comedy Series.
Other notable nominations that are worth a watch are:
Hell or High Water: a film in which two brothers plan a series of tactically-planned heists against the bank that's about to take their farm.
The Night Manager: a BBC series about undercover spy Tom Hiddleston (who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a mini-series) who goes in to work for Hugh Laurie. It's a short series and it's well worth losing a few nights of sleep to crush this.
Deadpool: you won't have missed the farcical number of billboards and adverts that preceded this film. Ryan Reynolds is outstanding. This is a great film.
So, there you have it, a little list of what to watch for 2017. Of course, there's plenty more but this is a good starting point. Enjoy.
