Traffic Light Photography
A moody, thoughtful photography project to cheer up your
Friday.
Lucas Zimmerman has chosen the most inane object as the
focal point for his project: the traffic light. The traffic light is an everyday
item that you most probably won’t remark upon when passing by, they are
omnipresent in society, something we see but don’t look at, recognise but
barely notice. Yet, Zimmerman loves to photograph the banal; by making the
banal the focus, it subsequently loses its banality and forces you to analyse
and look at it objectively; an interesting concept.
So, for his traffic light project, Zimmerman wanted to
capture the effect these little machines have when their lights illuminate in a
thick fog (not quite a pea-souper but getting there) and wanted to encapsulate
the details of the colours as they glow in the gloom. What it results in is a
mysterious and slightly eerie set of photographs, set on a seemingly deserted road,
with a beautiful, three-coloured afterglow that seems to sit comfortably on top
of the thick fog.
It’s a somehow soothing project that’s beautiful to look at.
