Skating on Paper

We’re always on the lookout for new, exciting cinematography techniques and despite the seemingly impossible task of being original in this day and age, talented cinematographers still manage to do it day-in day-out.

And thus, we stumbled across Paper Cut London on Vimeo and their innovative, unique skate film. Skating, surfing and skiing films have taken a different path in the last few years, becoming increasingly about the artful filming techniques and not just focusing on the incredible talent of the athletes that feature.

This is taken to the next level in Paper Cut London; a stop-motion skate film using more than 3500 pieces of paper to become a chef d'oeuvre. What’s more, it’s not just superimposed onto one type of paper; seamless transitions between a wide variety of beautiful textures and colours as well as the smooth contrast between realism and sketched images create an artistic and aesthetically stunning skate film. The constant movement of the paper gives a slow, steady rhythm and the relaxing music in the background keeps the clip at a laid-back pace, reflecting the character of the skaters involved.

It’s a great watch and well-worth sitting back and checking out, have a peek here and we’ll endeavour to keep finding these quirky cinematographers of the future.
