Moonlight's Acceptance Speech - What He Wanted to Say
We’ve all seen that
moment at the Oscar’s when La La Land
was awarded the coveted Best Picture Award instead of Moonlight. And yes, what a disaster for all involved. Impossibly
awkward for the La La Land team
finding themselves wrongfully onstage and a complete anti-climax for what
should have been the most incredible moment of the Moonlight team’s lives.
Anyway, PwC have apologised and one would assume a number of
people have been fired and probably sent off to a remote country somewhere
never to be seen again.
And, finally, Moonlight
director Barry Jenkins has revealed what he would have liked to say on the
night had things gone slightly more swimmingly. You can read his acceptance
speech below:
“[Moonlight playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney] and I are this
kid. We are Chiron. And you don’t think that kid grows up to be nominated for
eight Academy Awards. It’s not a dream he’s allowed to have. I still feel that
way. I didn’t think this was possible. But now I look at other people looking
at me and if I didn’t think it was possible, how are they going to? But now
it’s happened. So what I think of possibility, let’s take it off the table. The
thing has happened.”
So, the overriding feeling? Surprise, shock, unexpected
delight. Now that’s what we should have seen on the night, not a highly
uncomfortable “this is not a joke” speech from La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz.
Oh well, there’s always next time.
