Holly's Story
An incredibly powerful advert has recently been released by The
National Autistic Society designed to encourage people to have a little more
patience when it comes to communication with those who suffer from the disorder.
The deliberately overwhelming spot underlines the sensory
overload that autistic people experience and how paralysing and stressful this
can be. It’s a very well-orchestrated piece, which cinematographically moves steadily
towards a panic-ridden crescendo for the main character Holly (a young autistic
girl on her way to school). What it makes the viewer realise is how a bunch of seemingly
small, irrelevant moments progressively accumulate and become distinctly
frightening for someone like Holly.
The second most inspirational element of this ad is that
Holly (a real British schoolgirl) actually used this campaign to openly reveal
to her friends and classmates that she has autism. Revealing your autism on a
national scale through a TV campaign: that truly is genuine bravery.
Check out Holly’s advert here and take the message on
board: just have a little more patience.
