Banksy Hits Brexit
It’s always intriguing as to where the enigmatic,
Bristol-based graffiti artist Banksy
is going to pop up next. Starting his craft down in the South West, he now
features all over the world, taking his political and social satire all the way
from Gaza, to Calais, to Brick Lane. He’s so much more than graffiti these
days, running full-on art exhibitions in Bristol as well as opening the purposefully-miserable
Dismaland in Weston-Super-Mare in
2015, and has transformed himself into a street culture icon.
Now, his latest work has cropped up in Dover targeting (somewhat
predictably given the political context) the theme of Brexit. The mural shows a
metalworker steadily chipping away at one of the stars of the European Union
Flag, highlighting our imminent departure from the EU. As per usual with
Banksy, it’s simple, well-placed, and exceptionally effective, coming at a time
when Brexit tensions seem to be running immensely high.
Check out an image of the artwork below, no doubt it’ll crop
up all over your social media feeds this evening, and keep your eyes peeled in
France for a Macron-themed victory mural, or (perhaps more likely given his
love of political controversy) a Le Pen-dedicated satire, we have a sneaky
suspicion he’ll be planning it as we speak.
