An Injection of Colour
We have seen many projects in which old, vintage photos have
been reworked and recoloured to bring them up to date with the modern day. And,
some of them are amazing, very effective attempts that really do the photos
justice. However, distancing himself from this well-trodden realist path, Guy Catling has retouched a
selection of archaic photos in his own unique, mystical way.
Using bright colours and flowery motifs, Catling has added a
joyful vividness to his work. Taking certain (often historical) photos that portray
somewhat sad, depressing or difficult scenes, the graphic artist has transformed
the sentiment of the photo, simply by adding a small injection of dazzling colour.
Whether by replacing workers’ faces with brilliant shades of blue and green, adding
a little bit of flowery spice to a soldier’s helmet, or even rejuvenating and
stylising the Great Pyramids, Catling creates a surreal feeling of happiness in
all his work. There’s a strangely addictive element to all the photos in the
project, which means you won’t be able to look away: they are very entertaining
to peruse.
